Ricardo Brey
Brey wordt internationaal tot één van de meest vooraanstaande hedendaagse kunstenaars gerekend. Zijn werk richt zich onder meer op de verhouding van de mens tot de natuur, op culturele identiteit en op de interactie tussen verschillende culturen en religies.

Brey nam in 1981 deel aan de roemruchte tentoonstelling Volumen I in het Centro de Arte Internacional in Havana – een tentoonstelling die synoniem werd met de opkomst van een nieuwe generatie avant-gardistische kunstenaars in Cuba na de Revolutie; een ontwikkeling die ook wel is betiteld als de ‘Cubaanse Renaissance’. Brey woonde lange tijd in Havana en vestigde zich in 1991 in Gent.

Sinds zijn deelname aan de door Jan Hoet samengestelde Documenta IX in Kassel (1992) was Brey’s werk te zien in talloze instellingen in Europa en daarbuiten. Het SMAK wijdde in 2006 een solotentoonstelling aan deze kunstenaar, net als recentelijk het Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Havanna (2014). In 1998 ontving Brey de cultuurprijs van de Vlaamse Gemeenschap, evenals een Guggenheim Fellowship for installation art and sculpture. In 2015 presenteerde het M Hka in Antwerpen op drie locaties een grote overzichtstentoonstelling van zijn werk in België. Hetzelfde jaar was Brey met een omvangrijke presentatie vertegenwoordigd op de 57ste Biënnale van Venetië.

Brey in Nederland
Ook in het Nederlandse kunstenlandschap is Ricardo Brey geenszins een onbekende. In 1996 organiseerde het toenmalige Kunstcentrum Sittard een tentoonstelling van Brey’s werk, en in 2004 presenteerde het GEM in Den Haag een retrospectief van de kunstenaar. In 2017 verwierf de gemeente Sittard-Geleen twee belangrijke werken van Brey, die onlangs gepresenteerd werden in de tentoonstelling Eén. Recente aanwinsten voor de collectie hedendaagse kunst.

Recent werk
In zijn meest recente werk houdt Brey zich bezig met Europese tradities in de kunst, de geschiedenis van filosofie en religie. Zoals de historische avant-garde in de twintigste eeuw de moderne kunst ontwikkelde op basis van de kunst van Brey’s Afrikaanse voorouders, zo tracht de kunstenaar met zijn Afro-Cubaanse achtergrond via een interpretatie van de Europese Gotiek een nieuwe a-historische, mondiale en inclusieve nieuwe kunstvorm te ontwikkelen. Een omkering van het primitivisme in twintigste-eeuwse kunst.

Adrift
Vanaf 2000 besloot Brey zich niet langer te richten op het produceren van individuele werken, maar zich te concentreren op het ontwikkelen van omvangrijke, inhoudelijk samenhangende projecten en series. Na de deelname aan de Biënnale van Venetië ontwikkelde Brey het concept voor het project Adrift (2015-heden), dat op dit moment nog steeds een haast onuitputtelijke bron vormt. Het project bezit een sterk existentiële dimensie en is gericht op het brengen van veranderingen en breuken binnen het werk van de kunstenaar. Brey maakt in deze heterogene groep werken schijnbaar grote sprongen tussen verschillende media, technieken, formaten en onderwerpen. Tot nu toe resulteerde Adrift in omvangrijke groepen werken die fotografische elementen incorporeren, tekeningen op zeer groot en op uiterst klein formaat, evenals uiteenlopende nieuwe sculpturen.

Internationale samenwerking
In 2019 zullen verschillende musea en instanties elk delen uit Adrift tonen. In het voorjaar van 2019 vinden solo’s plaats in Museum hedendaagse kunst De Domijnen in Sittard en bij Alexander Gray Associates in New York. Vanaf december 2019 presenteert het Gerhard-Marcks-Haus in Bremen een solo van Brey. De tentoonstelling in Sittard is vooral gericht op de foto-gerelateerde werken die deel uitmaken van Adrift. In deze installaties gebruikt de kunstenaar in opdracht vervaardigde fotografie als vertrekpunt, om deze samen te voegen met sculpturale elementen, teken- en schilderkunst. De werken hebben veelal de mondiale ontbossing en klimaatverandering tot onderwerp. Naast de foto-gerelateerde werken wordt een selectie andere werken uit het project Adrift gepresenteerd, waaronder tekeningen en nieuwe sculpturen. Veel van de werken zijn vervaardigd ter gelegenheid van de tentoonstelling en hier voor het eerst te zien.

De tentoonstelling wordt gedocumenteerd in een uitvoerige publicatie die de verschillende onderdelen binnen het project Adrift belicht. Deze door Museum De Domijnen geïnitieerde publicatie, die een samenwerking vormt met het Gerhard-Marcks-Haus in Bremen en uitgeverij MER in Gent, zal in september 2019 worden gepresenteerd.

Museum De Domijnen is proud to present an exhibition with recent work by Cuban artist Ricardo Brey (Havana, 1955) from February 2019 onwards. It is the artist’s first solo exhibition in the Netherlands in fifteen years. In Brey’s recent drawings, sculptures and photo-related works his interest in existential themes, ecology and mystical traditions comes together. Brey is recognized internationally as one of the world’s leading contemporary artists. His work focuses, among other things, on the relationship between human beings and nature, on cultural identity and on the interaction between different cultures and religions. Brey participated in 1981 in the illustrious exhibition Volumen I at the Centro de Arte Internacional in Havana – an exhibition that became synonymous with the emergence of a new generation of avant-garde artists in Cuba after the Revolution; a development also called the ‘Cuban Renaissance’. Brey lived in Havana for a long time and settled in Ghent in 1991.
Since his participation in Jan Hoet’s Documenta IX in Kassel (1992), Brey’s work has been seen in countless institutions in Europe and beyond. SMAK devoted a solo exhibition to the artist in 2006, as did the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Havana in 2014. In 1998 Brey received the cultural prize from the Flemish Community, as well as a Guggenheim Fellowship for installation art and sculpture. In 2015, the M HKA presented a major retrospective of his work in Belgium at three locations in Antwerp. The same year, Brey was represented at the 57th Venice Biennale with a comprehensive presentation.
Ricardo Brey is by no means unknown to the Dutch art scene. In 1996 the then Kunstcentrum Sittard (!) organized an exhibition of Brey’s work, and in 2004 the GEM presented a retrospective of the artist in The Hague. In 2017, the municipality of Sittard-Geleen acquired two important works by Brey, which not long ago were presented in the exhibition Eén. Recent acquisitions for the contemporary art collection.

In his most recent work, Brey focuses on European traditions in art, the history of philosophy and religion. Just as the historical avant-garde in the twentieth century developed modern art based on the art of Brey’s African ancestors, the artist aims to develop with his Afrocuban background through an interpretation of the European Gothic, a new a-historical, global and inclusive new art form. A reversal of primitivism in twentieth-century art.
From 2000 onwards, Brey decided to no longer focus on producing individual works but to concentrate on developing wide-ranging, conceptually coherent projects and series. After participating in the Venice Biennale, Brey developed the concept for the Adrift project (2015-present), that at this moment still forms a seemingly inexhaustible source of material. The project has a strong existential dimension and is aimed at generating changes and breaks within the work of the artist. Within this heterogeneous group of works, Brey makes seemingly great leaps between different media, techniques, formats and subjects. Until now, Adrift has resulted in large groups of works that incorporate photographic elements, drawings on a very large and extremely small scale, as well as a variety of new sculptures.
In 2019 various museums and institutions will each show parts of Adrift. In the spring of 2019, solos will take place in Sittard and at Alexander Gray Associates in New York. From December 2019 the Gerhard-Marcks-Haus in Bremen presents a solo by Brey. The exhibition in Sittard is mainly focused on photo-related works that are part of Adrift. In these installations the artist uses commissioned photography as a starting point, combining these with sculptural elements, drawing and painting. The works often have global deforestation and climate change as their subject. In addition to photo-related works, a selection of other works from the Adrift project will be presented, including drawings and new sculptures. Many of the works were made on the occasion of the exhibition and can be seen at the museum for the first time.

The exhibition will be documented in a comprehensive publication that highlights the various components within the Adrift project. This publication, initiated by Museum De Domijnen, which forms a collaboration with the Gerhard-Marcks-Haus in Bremen and the MER publishing house in Ghent, will be presented in September 2019.
