J’aime la couleur & le monde
Met trots presenteert Museum De Domijnen voor hedendaagse kunst deze zomer een tentoonstelling van de Congolese schilder Chéri Samba. Met zijn uitbundige schilderijen, waarin hij kleurrijke figuratie samenbrengt met eigenhandige teksten, geldt hij tegenwoordig als één van de meest vooraanstaande hedendaagse Afrikaanse kunstenaars. De tentoonstelling in Sittard vormt de eerste museumsolo van Chéri Samba in Nederland, en één van de eerste gelegenheden sinds decennia dat in Nederland een substantiële groep werken van Samba wordt gepresenteerd.

Chéri Samba
De Congolese schilder Chéri Samba (Kinto M’Vuila, 1956) werd geboren als oudste van tien kinderen en groeide op in een landelijke omgeving. Zijn vader was smid, zijn moeder boerin. Op zijn zestiende verliet hij de school en zijn dorp om zich als reclameschilder te vestigen in de Congolese hoofdstad Kinshasa. In 1975 vestigde hij zijn eigen schilderatelier in deze metropool. Gaandeweg ontwikkelde de kunstenaar zijn karakteristieke ‘Samba-handschrift’ van kleurrijke, met glitter bestrooide, verhalende schilderijen vol begeleidende teksten waarin de kunstenaar persoonlijk commentaar levert op de wereld en zelf vaak figureert. Het zijn humoristische en wrange schilderijen die de directheid van strips hebben. “I had noticed that people in the street would walk by paintings, glance at them and keep going. I thought that if I added a bit of text, people would have to stop and take time to read it, to get more into the painting and admire it”, verklaarde de kunstenaar later. Voor zijn werk bedacht hij het predicaat ‘popular painting’ – een kunststroming waarachter zich ook andere kunstenaars van zijn generatie schaarden.

Samba’s werk
De tentoonstelling Magiciens de la Terre in het Centre Pompidou en de Grande Halle de la Villette in Parijs (1989) betekende de internationale doorbraak van Samba’s werk. Tegenwoordig geldt Chéri Samba als één van de belangrijkste Afrikaanse kunstenaars, en is zijn werk niet meer weg te denken uit biënnales en mondiale overzichten van hedendaagse kunst. In Nederland is Samba ook niet geheel onbekend. Zijn werk werd gepromoot door de Arnhemse Galerie 20 x 2 van Felix Valk en Galerie Apunto in Amsterdam. Samba’s schilderijen waren prominent aanwezig in de tentoonstelling Africa Now in het Groninger Museum (1991) en de manifestatie African Art Events in Maastricht (1992). In 2005 werd de kunstenaar bekroond met een prijs van het Prins Claus Fonds.

Collectie
Met zo’n dertig schilderijen biedt de tentoonstelling in Museum De Domijnen een overzicht van de ontwikkeling en thematische samenhang van Samba’s oeuvre. Veel van de werken in de tentoonstelling werden recent vervaardigd en worden hier voor het eerst gepresenteerd. De tentoonstelling is vernoemd naar het gelijknamige schilderij, gebaseerd op één van de prenten van de Nederlandse graficus M.C. Escher. De tentoonstelling van Chéri Samba zal worden gedocumenteerd in een publicatie.

Tegelijk met de tentoonstelling van Chéri Samba presenteert het museum een keuze uit de verzameling hedendaagse kunst. De international vermaarde verzameling hedendaagse kunst van de gemeente Sittard-Geleen heeft een sterk geëngageerd en maatschappij-kritisch karakter. Aansluitend bij de ‘popular painting’ van Samba wordt het werk van verschillende mondiale kunstenaars getoond die zich van woord en beeld bedienen, of kritisch kijken naar de (eigen) samenleving. Deze presentatie omvat werk van onder anderen Os Gemeos, Eugenio Dittborn, Öyvind Fahlström, Ed Templeton en Bárbara Wagner.

De tentoonstelling werd samengesteld door Roel Arkesteijn, conservator hedendaagse kunst, Museum De Domijnen, Sittard. Met speciale dank aan Erik en Luc Mulier, Marit Jacobs en Wouter Welling, evenals Pascal Polar.

Randprogramma
Op zondag 28 juli, 25 augustus en 29 september om 15 uur geeft curator Roel Arkesteijn rondleidingen door de tentoonstelling van Chéri Samba. Deze rondleidingen zijn gratis toegankelijk op vertoon van een geldig entreebewijs voor de tentoonstelling. Reserveren is niet nodig.

This Summer, Museum De Domijnen proudly presents an exhibition of the Congolese painter Chéri Samba. With his exuberant paintings, in which he brings together colourful figuration with hand-written texts, he is today regarded as one of Africa’s most prominent contemporary artists. The exhibition in Sittard is Chéri Samba’s first museum solo in the Netherlands, and one of the first occasions in decades that a substantial group of Samba’s works is being presented in the Netherlands.

Chéri Samba
The Congolese painter Chéri Samba (Kinto M’Vuila, 1956) was born the eldest of ten children and grew up in a rural area. His father was a blacksmith, his mother a farmer. At the age of sixteen he left school and his village to set up as an advertising painter in the Congolese capital Kinshasa. In 1975 he established his own painting studio in this metropolis. Gradually the artist developed his characteristic ‘Samba signature style’ of colourful narrative paintings strewn with glitter and full of accompanying texts in which the artist personally comments on the world and often appears himself. They are humorous and bitter paintings that have the directness of comics. “I had noticed that people in the street would walk by paintings, glance at them and keep going. I thought that if I added a bit of text, people would have to stop and take time to read it, to get more into the painting and admire it”, the artist explained later. For his work, he came up with the designation ‘popular painting’ – an art movement also joined by other artists of his generation.

Samba’s work
The Magiciens de la Terre exhibition at the Centre Pompidou and the Grande Halle de la Villette in Paris (1989) marked the international breakthrough of Samba’s work. Today, Chéri Samba is considered one of Africa’s most important artists, and his work is an indispensable part of biennials and global overviews of contemporary art. Samba is not a completely unknown name in the Netherlands, either. His work was promoted by Felix Valk’s Galerie 20 x 2 in Arnhem and Galerie Apunto in Amsterdam. Samba’s paintings were prominent in the Africa Now exhibition in the Groninger Museum (1991) and the African Art Events manifestation in Maastricht (1992). In 2005, the artist was awarded a prize by the Prince Claus Fund.

Collection
Together with the Chéri Samba exhibition, the museum presents a selection from the contemporary art collection. The internationally renowned collection of contemporary art of the municipality of Sittard-Geleen has a highly committed and socially critical character. Following the lead of Samba’s ‘popular painting’, the work of various global artists is shown who use words and images, or who take a critical look at their (own) society. This presentation includes work by Os Gemeos, Eugenio Dittborn, Öyvind Fahlström, Ed Templeton and Bárbara Wagner, among others.
